Coaches across Continents on Capitol Hill

CaC Founder Nick Gates with former LA gang member, Nafeesa Toney

April 14th, 2011.  It was a busy week for Coaches across Continents founder, Nick Gates supporting events in DC and Boston.

Nick was a speaker at the Urban Soccer Collaboration/US Soccer Foundation 4-day event in DC, where he supported more than 80 inner city soccer for development programs.  He spoke on the rapidly growing concern of nutrition, obesity and diabetes and worked with more than 20 organizations to develop their own soccer for health and wellness curriculum.  He was also part of meetings on Gang Violence, Innovative Coaching Methods, Monitoring and Evaluation and Grant Writing.  On the final evening, Nick ran an on field session at Georgetown University for some inner city players.

On the last day of the event, Nick led meetings on Capitol Hill to discuss with government heads and state senators the role of sport for social development.  “It was important that we spoke with national and local leaders about how sport can be used to help US children in dealing with many social issues like drugs, gangs and obesity.  The offices of Senator Brown and Senator Kerry were keen to show their support and assistance for the Coaches across Continents national and international programs”  Nick Gates.

Finally, Nick hopped on to a plane to Boston to support the Harvard soccer team versus Haiti in a game to raise funds for Partners in Health.  More than 9,000 fans turned out to support the game that was put together by the hard work of Ted Ashford, Tim Wheaton and all the players and staff at Harvard University.
