Project Green Hands (PGH) is a 2011 Beyond Sport award winner for “Sport for the Environment Award.” A part of the umbrella organization of Isha Foundation, PGH is implemented in nearly 600 schools per year. Their goal is to reach as many children as possible in order to change perceptions and habits concerning the environment and to assist in the planting of 114,000,000 trees. This is necessary as deforestation has caused drastic changes within the environment in Tamil Nadu, the state in which the Isha Foundation operates.
After our 2012 training, which took place at the Isha Yoga Center, the PGH coaches and ambassadors are looking to expand their reach by including Isha Vidhya, which are the rural schools that are run by the Isha Foundation. This ambitiousness is nothing new for the people of India, and as it was explained to our CAC team that in India, you take everything and add a few zeros to get an idea of the impact that they are looking to have through sport. The approach by the entire Isha Foundation is a comprehensive one, addressing education, the body and mind through yoga, and our responsibilities as humans in their outreach programs.
